چکیده

Ramanujan’s famous deathbed letter to G. H. Hardy concerns the asymptotic properties of modular forms and his so-called mock theta functions. For his mock theta function f(q), he asserts, as q approaches an even order 2k root of unity, that we have f(q)− (−1)(1− q)(1− q)(1− q) · · · ` 1− 2q + 2q − · · · ́ = O(1). We give two proofs of this claim by offering exact formulas for these limiting values. One formula is a specialization of a general result which relates Dyson’s rank mock theta function and the Andrews-Garvan crank modular form. The second formula is ad hoc, and it relies on the elementary manipulation of qseries which are themselves mock modular forms. Both proofs show that the O(1) constants are not mysterious; they are values of special q-series which are finite sums at even order roots of unity.

Continued Fractions with Three Limit Points

The research described in this paper was motivated by an enigmatic entry in Ramanujan’s lost notebook [11, p. 45] in which he claimed, in an unorthodox fashion, that a certain q-continued fraction possesses three limit points. More precisely, he claimed that as n tends to ∞ in the three residue classes modulo 3, the nth partial quotients tend, respectively, to three distinct limits, which he ex...

Optimal Distributed Generation Planning in Radial Distribution Networks Considering Protection Coordination Limits

Distributed generation (DG) has been widely used in distribution network to reduce the energy losses, improve voltage profile and system reliability, etc.  The location and capacity of DG units can influence on probability of protection mal-operation in distribution networks. In this paper, a novel model for DG planning is proposed to find the optimum DG location and sizing in radial distr...

Mock Theta Functions and Quantum Modular Forms

Ramanujan’s last letter to Hardy concerns the asymptotic properties of modular forms and his ‘mock theta functions’. For the mock theta function f (q), Ramanujan claims that as q approaches an even-order 2k root of unity, we have f (q)− (−1)(1− q)(1− q)(1− q) · · · (1− 2q+ 2q − · · ·)= O(1). We prove Ramanujan’s claim as a special case of a more general result. The implied constants in Ramanuja...

The Last of the Hypergeometric Continued Fractions *

A contiguous relation for complementry pairs of very well poised balanced 10φ9 basic hypergeometric functions is used to derive an explict expression for the associated continued fraction. This generalizes the continued fraction results associated with both Ramanujan’s Entry 40 and Askey-Wilson polynomials which can be recovered as limits. Associated with our continued fraction results there ar...
